Windows 10 Support Ends Oct 14 – Extended Security Updates Available

As you may have heard, Windows 10 will reach its end of support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft will no longer provide free software updates or security patches for Windows 10 PCs. Your computer will still work, but it will become more vulnerable to viruses and other cyber threats without these regular security updates.

The good news is that to help those who need more time, Microsoft has introduced the Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. This program lets eligible Windows 10 PCs continue receiving critical security updates for one year after the official end-of-support (until October 13, 2026). In other words, if your PC can’t upgrade to Windows 11 or you’re not ready to move to a new computer yet, the ESU program can keep your Windows 10 device protected a while longer.

Who qualifies for ESU? Any Windows 10 Home or Pro PC running the latest version of Windows 10 (version 22H2) is eligible to enroll. If your computer has been kept up to date, it likely meets this requirement. Microsoft has even started showing notices on eligible Windows 10 machines about the ESU program – you might see a prompt in your Settings or a pop-up letting you know about extended security updates. (If you see such a notification, rest assured it’s legitimate and from Microsoft!)

What does ESU include (and not include)? The ESU program will deliver the most important security patches to your Windows 10 PC each month, just like you’re used to. However, it will not introduce any new features or improvements to Windows 10. Think of it as a safety net – it keeps your system safe from new threats, but it won’t make Windows 10 do anything new. Also, general support for Windows 10 will end after October 14, so things like feature updates or technical help from Microsoft won’t be available (ESU is purely about critical security updates).

How much does it cost? For home and small business users, Microsoft has set the ESU program at $30 USD per PC for the one-year coverage. The enrollment is done through a built-in tool in Windows 10’s Settings, and you’ll need to sign in with a Microsoft account. Microsoft is also offering two ways to enroll at no additional cost if you prefer:
  • Back up your PC to the cloud using Windows Backup (OneDrive) – this option lets you enroll in ESU for free.
  • Redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points – if you participate in Microsoft’s free rewards program, you can use your points instead of paying cash.
  • Pay – if you don’t want to use the above options, you can simply purchase the ESU year.
All three methods above result in the same extended security coverage through October 13, 2026. You can even enroll up to 10 PCs under one Microsoft account if you have multiple Windows 10 devices. The process is straightforward and guided by an on-screen wizard – just follow the prompts that appear in Windows Update/Settings on your PC.

What about businesses with many PCs? For organizations that manage multiple computers, Microsoft offers the ESU program through its volume licensing partners. In that scenario, the Year 1 price is about $61 per device. Companies can renew annually for up to three years after 2025 (with the cost increasing each year). This option is geared toward larger setups, but if you run a small business and think you might need the volume-license route, we can certainly help you explore it.

Next steps – we’re here to help. We know this can be a bit confusing, but you don’t have to figure it out alone. Our team can help you determine the best course of action. If your PC is capable of upgrading to Windows 11, that might be the better long-term move (the upgrade is free on compatible devices). If your PC isn’t eligible for Windows 11 – or you just need to stick with Windows 10 a while longer – we can assist you in enrolling in the ESU program and making sure everything is set up correctly.

In today's rapidly evolving digital landscape, cyber threats are becoming more sophisticated and frequent than ever before. The traditional approach to cybersecurity, which relied on a trusted internal network protected by a secure perimeter, is no longer sufficient to safeguard our valuable data and systems. As a result, organizations are increasingly turning to Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA) as a more robust and effective security model.
